Tawaraya Sotatsu, Honami Koetsu,and Ogata Korin. All the artists represents Edo period were born in Kyoto, and grew up in Kyoto.It’s no exaggeration to say that most of RIMPA works, which have been handed over to the present, were drawn here in Kyoto.

One of the representative works of Ogata Korin, “The folding screens of Wind God and Thunder God” (Important cultural asset, owned by Tokyo National Museum) was also drawn in Kyoto. “The Wind God and Thunder God” by Korin and “The folding screens of Flowering plants of summer and autumn” by Sakai Hoitsu (Important cultural asset, owned by Tokyo National Museum) have been separated to be two different works. But those two used to be the front and back of one screen. This unique project is to reproduce the original style of the pair of screens, pictures on both sides, with a completed facsimile of “the Flowering plants of summer and autumn” and by newly creating facsimile of “The Wind God and Thunder God”, and make its home visit come true.

Kyoto has been deeply inherited the traditions and techniques of Japanese art. Through this project, we would like more Kyoto citizens and people to know Kyoto’s incomparable characteristic and to understand the significance of handing over valuable cultural assets to following generations.

When it’s completed, the screens will be donated to Kyoto prefecture. After the donation, the screens will be put on view at public facilities such as “The museum of Kyoto” and “Kyoto prefectural Library and archives” and planned to be used for workshops for children and lending to educational facilities in Kyoto.
